A three-day polio eradication campaign in 73 high risk districts to immunise children under age of five years will commence from Monday (today). According to an official of Ministry of Health's Expanded Programme on Immunisation (EPI), total 21 million children will be vaccinated during the campaign by 45,000 vaccination teams.

He said out of 73 districts, the anti-polio drops will be administered in 13 districts of Punjab, 22 districts of Sindh, 15 districts of NWFP, 17 districts of Balochistan, five agencies of FATA and the federal capital.

He said vaccine for poliovirus type-III will be delivered in Sindh and Balochistan while vaccine for type-I virus will be administered in Punjab, NWFP and FATA. He said the campaign activities will be monitored by area supervisors while zonal supervisors will also participate in the drive. He added the main focus of the campaign would be administering anti-polio drops to children living in high risk areas. He said total 24 million doses had been arranged, adding, polio vaccine being used in the country was safe and effective and was produced internationally while WHO has approved its quality.
